Congrats to @DudeitsDana who was randomly selected on Tuesday October 27!

contest details

To celebrate the long awaited announcement of their Chinese Democracy tour we’re giving away this genuine vintage Guns N Roses t-shirt! Kinda feels like they’ve been in a Coma since releasing the album so we thought it appropriate to giveaway this rare tee from their 1993 Coma tour.

This prize is available in XL and L – which are slightly smaller than today’s standard sizes.

Where did it come from you ask? About a year ago we found a small quantity vintage GNR tees that have been in storage for at least 15 years. They’re in mint shape, yet 100% true vintage. Want more info about our vintage GNR t-shirts?

New Addition to the Defunkd Family

storkLook up! The nav-tabs above now integrate our new vintage forum. I’ve balked at the idea of a Defunkd forum for a while because the archaic concept reminded me of my Commodore 64 BBS 300 baud days. But the more I thought about it – the more I warmed up to the idea and the more I kicked myself for not doing it sooner.

I field emails all the time from browsers who are interested in making trades, want to appraise their goods or need help assessing the legitimacy of certain items. Well, I don’t have all the answers and this blog is read by tons of expert buyers and sellers who probably do.

Sure, it will be a ghost town in the early goings but please register now and maybe even break the ice by saying hello. Check out the various categories and post any suggestions.

To get the ball rolling I will be directing all inquiries from this point forward to the forum, so please stand-by.

1979 Alien T-Shirt in 3D

My Vintage T-Shirt is a section written by our readers. Thanks to Peter over at monomurraymulcher for sharing this shirt and great story. If you have a rare vintage t-shirt and a great story please contact us.

vintage alien t-shirtMy rubber pop-out Alien t-shirt was one of those treasures of youth which was too special to be worn most of the time.  Shooting out from the middle of the chest is an exquisitely detailed rubber replica of the worm-like monster which pops out of the chest of character Kane (played by John Hurt) during dinner.  A notoriously disgusting horror moment and one of the few truly graphic horror moments of any blockbuster film of the era.  With the exception of Night of The Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1978), few mega-hit films featured gore this graphic.  Such splatter was generally consigned only to low-budget horror and grindhouse films.  Alien changed the cinematic landscape entirely in this regard, ushering in a grotesque Grand Guignol era in Hollywood film which has never really abated.

In 1979, images such as this would still truly shock audiences; I fondly remember screenings in my teenage years where far more visceral reactions happened among audience members than would ever happen in today’s desensitized pop culture landscape.  My friend Chris bolted from his seat to vomit when the little boy on the raft gets eaten by the shark in Jaws (1975); multiple seat-fleeings during a hugely attended screening of Night of the Living Dead, with people literally running up the aisles;  and of course, the constant talk on the bus about the “chest burster” from Alien.

So when I saw this t-shirt for sale at a local collectors’ store in 1983, I knew I had to have it.  The price tag was appallingly steep for the time – $20, if I remember right – and I had to save up for a while to get it.  Pleasurable days ensued as I wore it to various horror film premieres and the occasional pizza slice eatery, much to the chagrin of fellow diners and staff.

My most memorable wearing of this shirt, however, was to the 1986 opening of Aliens, the first sequel.  We went to a matinee at the magnificent Grand Lake theater across town, and afterward we became memorably stuck at a standstill in a traffic jam in my 1964 Dodge Dart.  We were parked in the middle of Interstate 880 on the former “Cypress Freeway,” on the lower deck of a split-level road which would later become infamously remembered as the “Cypress Structure”.  Three years later it collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, completely pancaking one deck atop the other, squashing rush hour motorists to the height of a postage stamp in some cases.  Somewhere, there is a photo of me behind the wheel of my Dart, wearing this shirt, taken from my friend standing outside the car.  Three years later, 42-odd people would be dead at this very spot.

Stryper Sins

vintage stryper t-shirt whip itIf you’re a vintage tee aficionado or Stryper fan (just kidding) check out the new film Whip It. This flick scores bonus points with a vintage tee that isn’t just wardrobe eye-candy – it’s an integral part of the script. Ellen Page’s character “Bliss” sports a vintage Stryper t-shirt throughout and it actually thickens the plot.

The tee cameo has the surprisingly still together band is in publicity heaven. They even weigh in on authenticity by pointing out the shirt in the film is a actually vintage bootleg and compare it to their licensed version. Any respect gained was quickly lost when I realized they’re cashing in by selling a reproduction of the film’s bootleg shirt from their website. The question is – do the original bootleggers get a royalty for their design?

Shame on your Stryper – ironically greed got the best of your Christian based heavy metal outfit. Now I don’t feel bad for featuring you tops on our 10 worst vintage band t-shirts you must wear.

Nike Air Trainer High (1987)

PD one from Niketalk is selling parts of his collection. One of the shoes that caught my eye are these original 1987 Nike Air Trainer High.

These look extremely good, especially for a 20+ year old shoe.
