Hammer Time

A round-up of vintage television tees on the Collective.

Miami Vice had everything. A beautiful setting, a hot cast and fast cars. Behind the scenes sat great writers, a top notch director and composer Jan Hammer. Hammer wrote the show’s epic theme but also scored the majority of episodes which solidified the melodramatics Vice was famous for. When it was tough times for the show’s main character – Sunny got his own theme music “Crockett’s Theme” which was a hit within itself.

Some might say Jan is a one hit-wonder as far as T.V. themes go (he’s no Mike Post), but it’s arguably the best of the 80s and maybe even of all time. And Jan was no slouch in the collaboration department given he went on to work various projects with Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger, Carlos Santana, Neal Schon and many others.

Speaking of Mike Post and kick-ass 80s themes, Magnum P.I. definitely ranks up there, perhaps just below the brilliant electro theme for Knight Rider. Falcon Crest deserves a nod for the prime time soap theme mostly because of its composer Bill Conti – who also did themes for Dallas, Cagney & Lacey (and all the Rocky flicks.)

The Tour of Duty theme is awesome, but they cheated by using the Rolling Stones’ Paint it Black. Last but not least – the theme for Mash perfectly communicates despair right down to its title, “Suicide is Painless.”

A gallery of vintage video game tees and screen shots for the original joystick wielders.

Video Game T-Shirt #7: Asteroids

Availability: Currently Available on Defunkd (click above)

Available to Play Online: Yes

Released: 1979

Platforms: Every platform in existence.

Gameplay: Maneuver your triangle shaped spaceship away from asteroids and flying saucers while blasting them anytime you get the chance. If you get in trouble use the hyperspace button and randomly warp your vessel to a new location on the screen. Beware though, that new location could mean on top of or directly in the line of danger.

Fact: In 1982 15 year old Scott Safran of New Jersey set a world record of 41,336,440 points on the arcade version of Asteroids. He passed away in 1989, but in 2002 Twin Galaxies awarded his family members in honor of his Asteroids achievement. His amazing record stood for 27 years, finally broken in 2010.

100% Vintage. 35% Sale. 100% Insanity.

WyCo_Vintage definitely keeps things interesting. Behold, what they’re dubbing their “biggest sale, ever.” Start with 35% savings on 2300+ items. Few sellers venture beyond 25% off and only those on the brink of pure insanity go beyond 30%.

If you’d bid on some auction style items they also have 50+ items up for grabs – starting at .99 cents. Who does that? Clearly not anyone in their right mind.

Apparently team Wyco barely managed to start the sale before the men in the white suits barged in and put them in straight jackets. Don’t worry they will be out in time to ship your purchases.

Hey, the loss of their minds is our gain. Get your seasonal shopping done early or just treat yourself to something you’ve had your eye on for a while.

The Buck Stops Here

A round-up of tees inspired by the legends of the squared circle.

Buck “Rock N Roll” Zumhofe is a legend in the ring, but definitely not for his achievements in the WWF. Zumhofe was a star in the AWA in the 1980s twice becoming the World Light Heavyweight Champion. Buck had an epic rivalry with Bobby “The Weasel” Heenan (before he was lured to the WWF and became famous for his brain.) Rock N Roll also dabbled in the even more obscure WCCW (World Class Championship Wrestling) as one part of the “Rock N Soul Connection” tag-team who achieved champion status twice.

He also made a handful of cameos as a whipping boy during WWF preliminary matches – but actually emerged with some bragging rights. He was the first victim of The Undertaker’s body bag as well as Triple H’s first opponent.

Long since retired Buck now mostly enjoys converting his old matches on VHS into DVDs for the YouTube.

Defunkd seller Black Market Pop Vintage has a few other wrestling gems up his sleeves. Next up is his beauty of a WWF ringer tee featuring the logo from their heydays. It’s a very odd size for a Screen Stars XL given it’s still an XL by today’s standards. Mr. Perfect and Legion of Doom also make cameos on The Collective topped off by a Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazine promo tee.
