Mahagamage = Malarkey

April 28, 2011 by Jimmy J · 4 Comments

These jerseys are popping up more and more often and being passed off as legit vintage. I did a little digging around and suspect Mahagamage is marketed at people in Japan given it commonly appears among Yahoo! Japan auctions. Another search highlights a gentleman by the name of Susil “Tony” Mahagamage who just so happens to be in the vintage business. He works for Denim King Vintage Wholesalers – Transatlantic Mixrags and most likely has ties to it. Perhaps a vintage inspired side business to his flourishing used clothing operation? Although no where online is he directly linked to the t-shirt brand but if he isn’t it would be one heck of a coincidence. He’s also located in Los Angeles which makes sense given the Tiny Pony/Academy Clothiers gang use Mahagamage for a lot of their bootlegs (label removed of course.) We’ve contacted Tony and others at his company to get the scoop, check the comments section for updates.

Below is what the seller of this item had to say in the description. Notice how many times they drive home the point of the shirt being real. A wee bit overkill? This has to be the most ridiculous description I have ever encountered for a t-shirt that clearly isn’t vintage. It has bids – hopefully it doesn’t fetch a lot.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. 100% AUTHENTIC JEFFERSON AIRPLANE & GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT 1970′S T-SHIRT. 3/4 SLEEVES. REAL VINTAGE. REAL RETRO NOT A MODERN COPY OR REPRODUCTION. USED NOT LIKE NEW. THIS SHIRT IS FOR SOMEONE WHO APPRECIATES GENUINE VINTAGE T-SHIRTS. LIGHT UNIFORM FADE. PRINTS AND LETTERS SHOW MINOR VINTAGE CRACKING BUT IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. A REAL ONE OF A KIND RELIC. VERY HARD TO FIND. CLEAN T-SHIRT. NOT FILTHY. RARE MADE IN USA. SIZE SMALL.

The $10,000 T-Shirt

April 26, 2011 by Jimmy J · 14 Comments

A few days ago the crew over at Stormcrow-Vintage was delighted to find their flagship t-shirt sold via eBay for [Begin Robin Leach Accent] a cool $10k. Arguably the rarest Zeppelin t-shirt in the world given it was used as a backstage pass for one of two concerts Zeppelin played at Knebworth House. It was printed in very limited quantities and only those privileged enough to be backstage and in the company of the band were given one of these relics. Stormcrow acquired the t-shirt directly from the family who screen printed the t-shirts for the event back in 1979.

Stormcrow’s $10,000 t-shirt was actually the second most expensive t-shirt for sale on eBay with a Beatles Banned Butcher tee tagged at twice the price. But until that or another t-shirt sells for more than $10k – we believe the sale of the Zeppelin tee is a record setting transaction. And just in case you’re wondering, the eBay transaction has been completed, the shirt has been paid for and will soon be en-route to the happy buyer who lives in Australia.

We think this deserves official recognition by the Guinness Book of World Records and we’re working with Stormcrow to submit a claim. In the meantime if you’re interested in the other priciest Zeppelin t-shirts take a peek at the listings below. Your kids don’t really need that college money do they?

Buyer Alert: 1223coo (happypretty10)

April 1, 2011 by Jimmy J · 23 Comments

I’ve heard so many complaints about this buyer over the years that a post like this is overdue. It’s evident that vintage t-shirt buyer 1223coo (now renamed happypretty10) has been operating unethically for many years. Back in my eBay selling days I considered blocking him from my listings because I consistently noticed that he left negative feedback for sellers claiming that packages never arrived (among other complaints.) He continued to purchase from me many times until that inevitable day came when I got an email from him claiming a particular package didn’t arrive. And unlike any other Japanese person I have dealt with he’s extremely rude, demanding and threatening in all his communications. I refunded his money immediately – trying to avoid a PayPal claim – knowing that I didn’t have tracking on the package and they would automatically rule in his favor. But that was a mistake. Since most people are quick to refund him outside of an offical claim, he flies under their abuse radar because these instances don’t have reports attached to them. Which is why it’s probably a smart policy to always ask buyers to submit a PayPal claim. 1223coo has obviously mastered his technique, never repeatedly making claims against the same seller – and seems to target more novice sellers who don’t usually offer vintage tees for sale.

Here’s a sad story one seller reported on Christmas eve 2010. I was always aware 1223coo was a dealer, but didn’t know he operated online via www.out-put.net. This seller reports getting a claim filed against him and then actually finding the shirts in 1223coo’s blog at a later date (he since removed the url). Unbelievable. If you’ve had this situation with him you might want to see if your shirt is or was available in his store or featured on his blog (newoutput.exblog.jp).

Keep in mind, many popular sellers have told me that he has been a regular customer for years and never raised any issues. Monitor this page and see what kind of comments roll in and decide for yourself if he warrants blocked bidder list consideration.

If you’ve had any dealings with this buyer (good or bad) please add your comments below – I’d like to use this as a forum to notify eBay and PayPal about his activities.

Defunkd Gets Enhancd

We’re still doing tweaks here and there but the death star is almost fully operational! Our new blog layout is more funky, a little less cluttered and a little cleaner. We’ve also included a nifty toolbar at the bottom of the screen to give you a snapshot of everything we’re up to online and it also facilitates site-wide announcements. But the best part of the toolbar is the language translator for our Malaysian, Japanese and other international friends who frequent our pages. We also enhanced our comments section ever-so-slightly to allow for easy quoting and replies.

There’s many more enhancements to come in 2011, but for now we’ll just get back to blogging. If you notice any issues with the site or have any suggestions for things you would like to see, leave us a message below.

And thank-you for your support over the years!
