The $10,000 T-Shirt

April 26, 2011 by Jimmy J · 14 Comments

A few days ago the crew over at Stormcrow-Vintage was delighted to find their flagship t-shirt sold via eBay for [Begin Robin Leach Accent] a cool $10k. Arguably the rarest Zeppelin t-shirt in the world given it was used as a backstage pass for one of two concerts Zeppelin played at Knebworth House. It was printed in very limited quantities and only those privileged enough to be backstage and in the company of the band were given one of these relics. Stormcrow acquired the t-shirt directly from the family who screen printed the t-shirts for the event back in 1979.

Stormcrow’s $10,000 t-shirt was actually the second most expensive t-shirt for sale on eBay with a Beatles Banned Butcher tee tagged at twice the price. But until that or another t-shirt sells for more than $10k – we believe the sale of the Zeppelin tee is a record setting transaction. And just in case you’re wondering, the eBay transaction has been completed, the shirt has been paid for and will soon be en-route to the happy buyer who lives in Australia.

We think this deserves official recognition by the Guinness Book of World Records and we’re working with Stormcrow to submit a claim. In the meantime if you’re interested in the other priciest Zeppelin t-shirts take a peek at the listings below. Your kids don’t really need that college money do they?

Hot Rod

A vintage t-shirt gallery inspired by the legends of the squared circle.

Item #2: Rowdy Roddy Piper

Year: 1986

Availability: Currently Available on eBay

Finishing Move: Sleeper Hold

WWF Accolade: The most famous wrestler to have never held a belt.

Canadian Roderick Toomb’s actual Scottish heritage landed him the role of a rambunctious bag pipe playing Scott from Glasgow. But it was his big wind pipes and quick wit that took him to the highlands of the WWF. Piper was an above average, injured all too often wrestler, whose mouth kept him working while he was working through injuries. He hosted his own segment known as “Piper’s Pit” where he stirred the pot between other wrestlers by serving up his Scottish rage. He’s arguably the best bad guy in the history of the sport…s entertainment.

Parts Unknown

A vintage t-shirt gallery inspired by the legends of the squared circle.

Item #1: The Ultimate Warrior

Year: 1990

Availability: Currently Available on eBay

Finishing Move: Gorilla press drop followed by a running splash.

WWF Accolades: Intercontinental (2), Champion (1)

The Warrior made a name for himself with his theatrics, physique and brute strength rather than wrestling ability. Bold entrances, mental instability and bright florescent detailing were welcome distractions from his dull wrestling maneuvers. His uncanny ability to press his opponents above his head was not only his signature move, but his saving grace. Today he enjoys a successful career as right wing conservative speaker and philosopher of life.

skippy haha

Remember this Vintage Vantage My Adidas RUN DMC t-shirt? Outrageously priced at $13,000 it made headlines as the world’s most expensive t-shirt. I started salivating over it just before Defunkd launched in 2004 and always wondered if someone would ever be crazy enough to buy it. I also subconscious thought “if these guys are selling shirts for $13k, I’m going to be a very wealthy man!” Ha. I kept an eye on it over the years and it never sold – so when VV dissolved I wondered what became of it and the rest of their true vintage goodies. After poking around a bit I was directed to a wicked Etsy store known as skippy haha vintage operated by Vintage Vantage veteran and former vintage tee shirt supermodel Heather M. The best of VV’s remains ended up here including the infamous RUN DMC t-shirt now priced at $86?! I immediately snapped it up and saved a whopping  $12,914. I love the history of this t-shirt so I had to have it in my personal collection.

As I was checking out their massive selection (close to 500 and definitely Etsy’s best) my eyes bulged out of my head when I noticed this DeLorean t-shirt. I’ve been searching for any true vintage DeLorean t-shirt since the early 00′s and had recently given up figuring one didn’t exist. Pretty sure if I run 88 MPH in it, I’ll be capable of time travel. While I test that theory out you should go check out skippy, they make vintage t-shirt dreams come true…at outrageously low prices.
