i’m selling some of my more expensive shirts, decided to use depop, posted a good amount. a week later i get a notification saying a shirt was taken down, a 1995 sonic youth parking lot bootleg, i put in the description stating its as a parking lot bootleg, obviously not official but definitely vintage and of historical significance. they deemed my listing "copyright infringement" and instructed me to not list the shirt again under any circumstances. it left me extremely confused considering how almost all of the shirts on there are listed as "modern" or a "reprint" , and depop seems to not pay any mind to those at all. it left me feeling frustrated. especially when they tell me there’s nothing i can do about it and that there’s nothing they’ll do about this situation. just kinda sucks when you’re trying to sell an actual piece of history on an app that’s filled to the brim with fakes and modern reprints.

ahhhhh depop, can you add a photo of the tee? this is a bit of a grey area, since it technically isn't licensed, but depop makes no sense - they allow modern counterfeits listed as "reprints" and go to bat for sellers who sell them, then turn around and take down something that is actually vintage.

I get why that’s frustrating. Even though you clearly labeled it as a 1995 parking lot bootleg, platforms like Depop treat any unauthorized merch — vintage or not — as copyright infringement. If a rights holder reports it, they’re legally required to remove it, and they usually won’t make exceptions.

The reason you still see tons of “modern” reprints is likely because they haven’t been reported yet. Most marketplaces enforce IP rules reactively, not proactively, so it can look inconsistent.

It sucks, especially when you’re selling something with real vintage value, but from their standpoint, unauthorized is unauthorized. You might have better luck listing it on a platform that specializes in archival or collector-focused vintage pieces.
