Black Flag T Shirt REALLY 1985 or NOT?

Post by Corey »

I have a questionable item. I have scoured this site and the internet and cannot confirm the date of a shirt. The questionable item is a Black Flag T-Shirt. I can feel the screen print and it is dated 1985 SST RECORDS below the first Black Flag bar. However, the tag leads me to believe it was not made in 1985. It has a Hanes BEEFY-T split tag, made in Honduras, 100% PRESHRUNK COTTON. The shirt looks like it is from 1985 though. This is driving me crazy.

Unfortunately it's NOT.

That label is Mid-late 90s, possible even early 00s. If you check this post you can see all the true vintage Hanes 80s labels:

Where did you get it from? eBay? If so which vendor?

(Please note: Legit checks I do in this forum should not be considered 100% conclusive; I'm simply giving a gut reaction based on the limited information provided.)

The logo itself may date back to 1985, but not the shirt: if they hadn't altered the logo to any serious degree, they may not have bothered to re-copyright it. I had an 80's shirt of a flyer for a Santana/Janis Joplin concert once, and it was copyrighted 1968. I'm guessing it's the same kind of thing.

I'm fairly certain the 1985 date refers to when Greg Ginn guitarist for Black Flag and owner of SST records first got a copyright for the logo created by Ginn's brother Raymond Pettibon in January of 1979.

That tag is from the mid to late 90s, sorry. The "made in el salvador" is a dead giveaway- Beefy-Ts were previously made in the US of A.
