Authentication Request: NIRVANA NEVERMIND LONG SLEEVE

Post by thehelenfinds »

Hi everyone,

I need help authenticating a Nirvana Nevermind long sleeve shirt. Two AI tools gave me completely opposite verdicts, so I'm hoping the experts here can settle it.

Details:
• Style: Long sleeve, white
• Front: Nevermind album artwork (swimming baby) + "NIRVANA NEVERMIND" text
• Sleeves: "NIRVANA" printed in large blue letters
• Back: "NEVERMIND" header + full 12-track tracklist in blue
• Print copyright on front: © NIRVANA UNDER LICENSE TO GIANT
• Neck tag: Wild Oats / Made in USA / Size L
• Care label: 100% pre-shrunk cotton / RN# 73995
• Condition: Some yellowing on one cuff, otherwise clean

The core question:
Is a Giant-licensed Nirvana shirt with a Wild Oats neck tag a known legitimate combo from the early 90s — or is this a classic tell of a modern Asian repro that mixes Giant copyright with a Wild Oats blank tag to appear more valuable?

I've seen arguments on both sides. One view: Giant was the licensor, Wild Oats was just the blank manufacturer. Counter-view: Wild Oats was itself a merch licensee (Brockum subsidiary), so both on the same piece makes no sense.

Photos attached: front, back, sleeves, neck tag, care label, copyright print, cuff stain.

Thanks in advance!

Gut reaction, based on the fact that the printing on the back, the fonts the spacing is incorrect, it's a modern counterfeit - maybe with a OATS tag installed.

Do a comparison of the back - you'll notice the fonts are incorrect pay attention to the double digit numbers and the spacing.

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for taking the time to look at this. Your note about the fonts and spacing on the back was exactly the kind of detail I couldn't verify myself — really helpful.

Appreciated!

I spoke with Brett W. who used to work at Oats, the Giant / Oats tag is possible. But then he discovered a similar modern print of this arm print, and same back - so highly likely this is a modern print with a vintage oats tag installed, or maybe even a new fake oats tag.

Where are you getting all these tees?
