Vintage RESERVOIR DOGS T Shirt

Post by camis_wapas »

Yoo!

So let’s analyze this tee I got from Vinted from the user jmm-64 who has some fakes and some legit tees on his profile [https://www.vinted.es/member/237572330]. When I get it in my hands I’ve asked Lucas and macs_throwbacks, who have it listed on eBay [https://www.ebay.es/itm/286187899118?it ... SwHT1nSObP], to know their opinions and they said it was legit. When Jimmy did yesterday the grails gone wild post, someone suggested that it could be a fake one. When I asked for the legit check, I've also did a quick search by myself and I found these examples:

https://jp.mercari.com/item/m34577473965
https://www.etsy.com/es/listing/1692444 ... s-90-de-la

Other aspects that may catch my attention are the double stitching on collar and the tag dimensions, it's way bigger than others euro I've seen. Sooo here I let you the pictures of the tee, if you miss anything else, just let me know.

I’m adding another black and white version of the tee with the late 90s/ early 00s euro tag

Judging from the fiber material and screen printing, it's quite good, nothing suspicious. I suspect this is a late 90s/2000s reprint, because considering the film was released in the early 90s, it could have been an official European release, so I don't think it's a fake.

this t-shirt was initially bought on Vinted by my friend, here is the original listing
https://www.vinted.es/items/6955202453- ... rvoir-dogs. He bought it in the first minutes of it being online. After doing so, he texted me over whatsapp asking for my thoughts. I had a look and saw what looked like a "modern" (in some way I wasn't able to tell yet) font/tag. Also compared the print against a couple of references of the original tee, spotted some inconsistencies and told him that I believed it was a fake. Then he sent me the Vinted profile of the seller, which you can check in OPs post and we spotted some other fakes like SADE on a BC tag, fake Snoop Dogg Death Row 'Wall Dog' Tee, fake Guns N Roses on Winterland tag (that he still has) mixed with some legit random low value 90s t-shirts that he still has as well. My friend then asks the guy about the origins of the tee and he says he thrifted it in Budapest, but at this point he is convinced it has to be a fake as well and cancels the order. We both move on until we saw it in Grails Gone Wild some days ago and then we went deep into the rabbit hole, mostly out of sadness on missing a potential great deal if confirmed it is indeed legit and we were wrong.

MY FINDINGS:

Since something about the font tag was really off, I concentrated my efforts in the tag, and these are the inconsistencies I've found that I've never encountered before in these past years of collecting and reselling.

1. THE LETTER 'R' IN THE WORD "LARGE"

The most subtle and confusing one. This is what my brain subconsciously picked up first. Let's use OPs image of the two tags comparison as an analysis example:

Image

- The top "R" (upper label) has a straight, clean vertical stem and a sharply angled leg that starts at a high point, giving it a geometric, uniform look.

- The bottom "R" (lower label) has a more rounded bowl and the leg flows out with a softer, cursive-like curve, making it appear less uniform, with increased variance in stroke width and a distinct terminal on the leg, suggesting a vintage, less industrial print method.

100% Cotton was using thin 'paper tags' in the 80s, early 90s that will start fading in contact with sweat and completely fade away first wash, pretty much like Screen Stars of the same era. Here is an example from the same shirt model but '92 OG https://ebay.us/m/YRwpXb. Been able to find examples of that one until 1992. From there until late 90s, the most used tag format (with different variations in design & font details) is the one replicated in this t-shirt, with thicker cloth, but not even once we've seen it with that 'R' shape. There's also a notably difference in the 'G', but I haven't been able to confirm it wasn't used like that, due to some of the examples I have of what looks like similar ones being in faded tags, in which the shape of that part of the letter can't be seen well. In the current form displayed in OPs tee it does not look like the ones used in the 90s. So, the main difference is that the upper "R" and the general aspect of the text looks modern, geometric, and printed with mechanical precision, while the lower has a looser, more organic appearance with a curved leg that implies vintage origins.

LEGIT TAGS from the 90s with thicker cloth, standard (with many variations) from early to late 90s.

It is also worth noting that from the late 90s onwards, they changed the format of the tags to a wider one, with less text, that looks like this Image Taken from OPs second post where he says he found another version of the Reservoir Dogs or this one also taken from OPs insta feed, from a Nirvana 00s tee (and how a 100% Cotton tag late 90s and especially 00s looks!)

There are also some other variants to this tag.

2. 'DO NOT IRON'

Another thing I haven't been able to find a similar example of is another tag with the sentence 'DO NOT IRON'. The closest in shape (three words, takes about the same space in the tag) would be the phrasing found in early 90s tags that says "USE WARM IRON". The rest of the tags we've seen display the instructions "DO NOT DRY CLEAN OR IRON IF DECORATED" in the 80s, and "DO NOT IRON MOTIF" in the 90s. There are occurrences where minimal variations around the 90s instructions can be found in legit tags, but never without the word "MOTIF" in it.

3. CONTRADICTORY INSTRUCTION MESSAGE

On top of the questionable "DO NOT IRON" message, the iron sign in the tag with two dots, indicates that you can actually iron it at medium temperature :P Although you can regularly see this sign in the tags from the 90s, it clearly states "DO NOT IRON MOTIF" so one would understand that both instructions are not exclusive, since you can still iron the rest of the shirt where there's no print at medium temp. "DO NOT IRON" is a clear message, which should be displayed with the other commonly found sign in 90s tags, the iron crossed out, as you can also see in OPs tag comparison or check this from my collection.

EXTRA CAREFULLY: NECK TYPE, PRINT AND FADE

Important comparison here, since the neckline and stitching seems too modern, too sharp, more precisely sewn and not thick enough to be a 90s/00s neck construction, but it resembles more to a modern tee. Another aspect we can add, although still not conclusive by itself, but it's def different from any other Reservoir Dogs tee out there, even those from the late 90s/00s.

In the other hand, the print has some inconsistencies that are also found in the Chinese replica, but not in the OG from 1992.

The fade has also a major inconsistency, at least to my eyes. The OG print looks like it has some fade in the characters figure, but it's actually light from the original movie image. This can be confirmed if you look at how black the Reservoir Dogs title is.
Image

Nevertheless, OPs print shows fade all over the black colors, which suggest an artificial fade/bleaching. When an og tee shirt would fade to that point, the tag should show some fading also, but here it does not. Also the image of the characters has been tampered with in terms of colors. That light that hits the characters in the OG is not present in this one, and the skin color is more pink-ish, like in the Chinese replica. This could be a better job if this is truly a reprint, but there's also some differences in the position of the blood which you can spot if you pay attention to, let's say, Tarantino's head and the blood behind it.

MY FRIENDS FINDINGS:

While I was with the tag, he thought it would be a good idea to check Chinese replica apps, and he got this result first try. A stunningly similar replica t-shirt with a 100% Cotton tag that you can grab for less than what a coffee costs.

BACK TO THE 'ORIGINAL' VINTED SELLER PROFILE

Since none of the above is 100% conclusive evidence of a fake (I guess), we should take a deeper look at the context surrounding the origins of the t-shirt at hand, in order to find more clues.

Remember the SADE tee on the BC tag that was mentioned in the beginning that is now gone? Well, it is not gone gone. In fact, it was published again in the same platform by the buyer that got it from our 'original' friend. Here is the current listing, with tag now cut-off https://www.vinted.es/items/7073290464- ... r-talla-sm Description of the listing goes like: "Bootleg T-shirt bought in Budapest in a vintage store, but after consulting several experts in vintage T-shirts, they all tell me that it's probably from the early 2000s, so it can't exactly be considered vintage from the 90s."

Before cancelling his initial order on the Reservoir Dogs, my friend asked the seller where did he got it from and he said that he got it in a thrift in Budapest. That's the same story that is being displayed in the description of the current listing from the new 'Sade victim'.

Now, let's take a deeper look at what else he was selling that day, the Snoop Dogg tee. Here's the only picture I have of it, since I thought it was ridiculous but I didn't think at the time a screenshot of the listing was necessary.

Vintage RESERVOIR DOGS T Shirt

and here are the tags of Sade that were cut-off by it's current owner, EDIT: My friend tells me it was originally priced at 150, same price the current owner is asking for...

So, after seeing this other fakes details, could we still think that this is a bona fide seller and that prices reflect the legitness of each garment? Def, someone who knows or gets hyped tees like that, must know that an OG Reservoir Dogs tee costs more than 80 euros, but he was still asking 150 for Sade with that "rumble" tag on it... so most likely he is not one of those.

CONCLUSION:

Although we can't be 100% conclusive yet, my opinion is that there's an important chain of clues that seems way too suspicious to just be ignored, and all of them point to the worst outcome, that indeed this t-shirt is a fake, probably a newer one that can fool most people, even aged collectors. It is getting to the point where we have to pay attention to every. little. detail. !!! Anyway, at this point if OP wants to know further before selling, there's the possibility of ordering the Chinese version for way less than what a legit check in Legiteem8 would cost.

EDIT2. a 4th point could be added for TAG SIZE.

Now that OP posted a pic with both tags side to side, I'll also add that I've never seen a 90s tag that big. Normally they are as big as the og black tee one, and that's about it. The bigger ones are the late 90s/00s ones, but 90s are all pretty much the same size even across different variants.

The BG tag pictures are from the defunkd fake tags post, they’re not he original pictures from the Vinted listed tee. I remember that the tag from original listíng had a hole just in the place of the letter “t” from word “tumble”, so we’ll never know if it said “rumble” or “tumble”, but I must admit that I agree that the sade tee is fake. We all know there’s a lot of Sade fakes on market due to it’s high value.
