Frankly, Mr. Shankly

I stumbled on the above Morrissey Kill Uncle era relics by searching eBay’s top performing vintage t-shirt listings. $150 each with a few hours left before the listing ended…

Looks like the 1990s nostalgia bug continues to bite. We reported on the surging Nirvana vintage t-shirt trend a few months back. And Nirvana is to alternative what Morrissey is to indie so it’s no surprise his early 90s tees are now a hot ticket. It’s true, the 1990s are the new 1980s. Like clockwork 90s music swag is experiencing the same eBay action the rock merch of the 80s did in the early 2000s.

I was under the impression that indie and alternative were more or less the same entity. What is the difference in the dictionary of Jimmy J?

I always thought of it in terms of the sound of the music? Alternative was more mainstream grungey U.S. rock, indie was softer UK stuff. But I was too busy listening to electronica in the early 90s so I really can’t speak with any authority.

This answered all my questions, I will sleep like a baby tonight. I hope it helps you too.

    “The Verdict

So, yes, there is a distinction between ‘Alternative’ and ‘Indie,’ and now that you know, you too can use each judiciously. As for the differences between indie, indie-pop, and indie-rock, well, um, you’ll just have to use your imagination. Because there aren’t any, really.”

got a comment via email re: this post:

Hi,again 3 Morrissey T-shirts of “1991″ are ALL “FAKE” made now! As for the original shirt, the copyright of “1991″ is surely written to the bottom of a print. I buy many T-shirts from you. Didn’t you understand these as “FAKE”? You will not be professional supposing you do not understand. You should write the fact of “FAKE” on your BLOG!!! Thanks.
